Offshore oil rigs are undoubtedly a potentially hazardous working environment. Since the first offshore oil rigs were constructed, numerous disasters on offshore oil rigs have occurred around the world. The most fatal offshore oil rig disaster to date was the Piper Alpha disaster in the North Sea, United Kingdom in July 1988. On July 6, 1988, a gas leak on the platform ultimately led to several explosions on the platform, killing *** of the platform's *** workers, and taking almost three weeks for the fire to be controlled.
