By comparison, the state with the highest number of Torres Strait Islander residents was Queensland with over 24,000 people. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are differentiated by the area of Australia their ancestors inhabited. Aboriginal people come from the Australian mainland and Tasmania, Torres Strait Islander people come from the string of islands between northern Queensland and Papua New Guinea.
