A total of *** billion U.S. dollars were estimated to be invested for the development of railway infrastructure in India, out of which a significant share of ** billion U.S. dollars were allocated for track and safety. The aim was to increase logistics and passenger-handling capacity. To boost the private sector's confidence for investing in railway development, the Government of India provided longer lease periods, and parcels of land near railway stations for commercial development.
