Racial disparities exist in the U.S. regarding personal experiences with knowing people who have had serious illnesses arising from COVID-19. Approximately a quarter of black U.S. adults say they personally know someone who has been hospitalized or died due to having COVID-19, whereas only 13 percent of both white and Hispanic U.S. adults said the same.
