Between 2017 and 2019, ** percent of countries from the East Asia & Pacific region had adopted artificial intelligence (AI) surveillance technologysof, whilst less than a quarter of African countries had adopted such mechanisms, with technological underdevelopment cited as a cause of this. Technologies and solutions involved include smart city or safe city platforms, facial recognition systems, and smart policing.
