What is edge computing?

  Edge computing is the delivering of storage, computing, and network capabilities to the locations where date is generated, through which less latency, reduced cost, and greater performance are obtained. It is a technology that complements the traditional centralized cloud computing model, as the fast-growing number of connected devices demand greater computing and network support closer to the end users. The worldwide edge computing market is projected to reach revenues of billion U.S. dollars by 2024.  

Adoption of edge computing

  Across industries, adoption of edge computing is on the agenda. The manufacturing industry is most ready to adopt the technology, followed by utilities and telecommunications. Use cases that require low latency, such as autonomous driving and cloud gaming, are enabled by edge computing. Other verticals such as smart cities, where millions of devices are connected at the same time, also depend on edge computing to provide the network capacity, as the centralized cloud model cannot sustain this amount of device and data transmission.
