As an important member of the global chip industry, Netherlands-based ASML is the largest European semiconductor company in terms of market capitalization. ASML offers a wide portfolio of semiconductor manufacturing equipment and services, used by a variety of firms in the production of advanced chips. ASML’s solutions are used by the likes of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) – the world’s largest semiconductor foundry.

Where do ASML’s machines fit in the production process?

The semiconductor industry can be categorized into three distinct stages: design, fabrication, and assembly. The production or fabrication of semiconductors is completed either by integrated device manufacturers such as Intel or Samsung, or outsourced to a foundry company. A foundry is a company that manufactures chips in a fabrication plant. Such firms rely on semiconductor manufacturing equipment – like those supplied by ASML – and materials to fabricate a chip design on a silicon wafer.
