Universities: Universities listed in tables A, B, and C of the Higher Education Support Act 2003 (‘HESA’)
TAFE: Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions established by state and territory governments.
Not-for-profit providers: Non-university and non-TAFE providers that are registered not-for-profit organizations with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (‘ACNC’). Government agencies and government controlled entities are also included in this grouping.
For-profit providers: Non-university and non-TAFE providers that are not registered not-for-profit organizations.
Attrition rates based on small numbers, students with less than 20 equivalent full time student load (<20 EFTSL), were excluded.

In 2018, attrition rates were highest for domestic students attending Australian TAFE institutions, with a median attrition rate of **** percent of domestic students not returning for their second year of studies. International students were more likely than domestic students to return for their second year of studies across all tertiary education institutions in Australia. Domestic and international students enrolled at universities tended to have lower attrition rates, compared to their counterparts at other tertiary institutions.
