These data represent student visa holders and do not include students holding other types of visas that permit study. In particular, many ELICOS students might not hold student visas.

Share of Chinese students located abroad in Australia 2020 by visa subclass
As at March 1, 2020, ** percent of higher education students from China were located outside of Australia. With the exception of vocational education and training, at least a quarter of all other student visa subclass holders from China were not in the country, despite the Australian school year having started in the previous month of February. The coronavirus pandemic and a subsequent travel ban on Chinese nationals to Australia was largely responsible for thousands of students being unable to enter Australia to begin the 2020 school year.
