In 2018, it was found that among those who first contacted alternative health services before attending the accident and emergency (A&E) department in England, close to ** percent were either referred or directly transferred to A&E after their first contact. While another ** percent of respondents sought emergency care because their health deteriorated further after visiting or contacting another care service.
