Before 1999, marriage data were extracted on the basis of 'date of marriage'. From 1999 onwards, marriage and civil union data are extracted using 'date of registration'.

Number of overseas resident marriages in New Zealand 2013-2019
In 2019, there were around 2,877 overseas resident marriages in New Zealand, an increase from the number recorded in 2013. The first civil unions in the country were celebrated in 2005, and the first same-sex marriages were celebrated in 2013.
