Before 1999, marriage data were extracted on the basis of 'date of marriage'. From 1999 onwards, marriage and civil union data are extracted using 'date of registration'.

Number of marriages and civil unions in New Zealand 1983-2018
In 2018, around thousand marriages and civil unions were registered in New Zealand, a decrease from the number recorded in 1983. The first civil unions in the country were celebrated in 2005, and the first same-sex marriages were celebrated in 2013.
