The volume of liquid bulk cargo, which includes petroleum derivatives, chemicals, crude oil and other liquid bulk cargo processed by the Port of Antwerp, almost doubled over the recorded time period. In 2008 the total volume of liquid bulk processed was around ** million metric tons, whereas by 2021 this had increased to roughly ** million metric tons of cargo.
In 2022, the ports of Antwerp and Bruges underwent a merger. The dramatic increase in liquid bulk cargo throughput in 2022 can thus be explained by the merger of the two ports.
