This graph represents the share of French women who were previously harassed or sexually assaulted in October 2017, by type of assault. According to the Ministry of Justice, a sexual assault constitutes in an assault committed with violence, coercion (physical or moral pressure), threat (announcement of reprisals in case of refusal by the victim) or surprise (victim is unconscious or in a state of inebriation). Anyone who commits acts of a sexual nature against a person (and in some cases, children) without his or her consent, through emotional manipulation or blackmail, is committing a sexual assault. In whatever manner it comes to be, sexual assault is an act subject to prosecution and criminal sanctions.
