In 2024, the number of airport passengers in Thailand amounted to more than *** million, marking a significant increase from only approximately 20 million visitors in 2021. The Thai passenger aviation sector has made a strong recovery after being severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and global travel restrictions.

Air travel in Thailand

Thailand's strategic location and robust tourism sector make it one of Southeast Asia's most significant air transportation hubs. In 2024, there were nearly **domestic and international flights registered in Thai airports. Since the country fully reopened its borders to tourists in 2022, the air passenger volume in Thailand has increased constantly. To accommodate this continuous growth in air passenger traffic in the country, the Airports of Thailand (AOT) has outlined a significant investment plan to upgrade and expand airport infrastructure across the country over the next 5 to 10 years, aiming to bolster Thailand's position as a regional aviation hub.  

Don Mueang: primary hub for domestic flights and low-cost airlines

While Bangkok's main and busiest airport is Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang serves as the main airport for domestic travel and low-cost carriers. In 2024, Don Mueang Airport registered the highest number of domestic passengers among other airports in the country, amounting to nearly ** million passengers. Thai Air Asia, Thailand's biggest low-cost airline, held the highest number of domestic passengers arriving at Don Mueang Airport in 2023, with over nine million domestic passengers. Other leading airlines operating at this airport are Nok Air and Thai Lion Air.
