Paper and board production in CEPI Europe countries** decreased by five percent in 2020 compared to 2019, according to preliminary figures. The outbreak of COVID-19 impacted the paper industry, causing mill closures and lower demand. Production of newsprint paper and printing and writing paper fell by 20.5 percent and 18.4 percent, respectively. In comparison, the demand for sanitary and household paper increased by roughly two percent. With lockdowns forcing many people to shop online, the production of packaging grades saw an increase of 2.1 percent.
