In 2023, an average of approximately 3.2 million passengers a day used the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) in Singapore. Overall, average ridership recovered compared to previous years, after a decline mainly due to the COVID-19 measures.

MRT network infrastructure

The MRT system is one of Singapore's main means of public transport, with over 140 stations on six lines. In 2023, the length of the MRT network reached 230 kilometers, an increase of around 77 kilometers since 2014. In recent years, three stations on the Thomson-East Coast MRT line in the north of the island were opened in January 2020, and 11 new stations were opened in the second half of 2022. Construction of the Cross Island Line began in January 2023, and its first phase is scheduled for completion by 2030.

Ridership and delays

In 2023, an average of around 7.2 million passengers used public transport daily in Singapore. Public transport use rebounded with the easing of COVID-19 restrictions. During the same year, MRT traffic flow amounted to almost 43 million train kilometers, remaining stable over the past four years. In terms of network punctuality, Singapore MRT's North South Line (NSL) recorded the most delays, with three delay of over 30 minutes during the year. A total of five major delays were recorded on the Singapore Rapid Transit (MRT) network, with overall delays declining since 2016.
