When it comes to the total level of U.S. credit card debt, the country's most populous states lead the way. California is in first position with a staggering $106.8 billion. followed by Texas with $67.3 billion. The picture is different on a per capita basis, however, with Alaska in first position. That's according to by the New York state comptroller's office.
At the end of last year, an average Alaskan resident had a credit card balance of $4,270, over $1,000 higher than the national average of $3,100. New Jersey is the second worst state for credit card debt with $3,910 per capita while Hawaii comes third with $3,860. The south is better off and Mississippi has the lowest average debt per capita with $2,020.
