What do Bill Gates and Carlos Slim have in common? Both were once ranked the richest man in the world by Forbes Magazine. An engineer by training, Carlos Slim’s conglomerate Grupo Carso acquired Telefonos de Mexico (TelMex) in 1990, when the Mexican government started privatizing its telecoms industry. Ten years later, América Móvil spun off from TelMex and would grow to become one of the biggest telecom companies in the world. In 2023, it totaled nearly 384 million subscribers and generated annual revenues worth approximately 816 billion Mexican pesos, or over 48 billion U.S. dollars.
