In 2023, UnitedHealth Group reported total revenues of around 359 billion U.S. dollars. The group is among the world鈥檚 ten largest companies in general, and it is the largest U.S. healthcare insurance company. Since 2010, UnitedHealth鈥檚 revenues increased more than threefold, showing a massive growth over the course of just over one decade. The company generates by far its largest share of revenues through health insurance premiums, being responsible for nearly four fifth of total revenues. UnitedHealth Group is headquartered in Minnetonka, Minnesota.
United Healthcare 鈥 health insurance is the focus
UnitedHealth Group can be divided into two major segments: UnitedHealthcare which is providing mostly health insurance coverage and health programs, and Optum, which is mostly known for its pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) and health care provider services. United Healthcare鈥檚 largest part is the Medicare and Retirement business, exceeding 129 billion U.S. dollars in revenue for the time in 2023, followed by the Employer and Individual business with around 67 billion U.S. dollars in revenue. More than 52 million people worldwide are served by UnitedHealthcare, of which some 90 percent are in the domestic U.S. market.Optum 鈥 pharmacy business is the driver
On the other hand, Optum鈥檚 largest business is Optum Rx. As the name points to, this business is focused on the distribution of prescription drugs and represents the fourth largest pharmacy in the United States. Optum Rx has increased its revenues threefold since 2014, to over 116 billion U.S. dollars in 2023. Other businesses are Optum Health and Optum Insight. Optum Health provides direct care through local medical groups and ambulatory care systems in the form of primary, specialty, urgent, and surgical care. Optum Insight is focused on data and analytics, as well as research and consulting.
