U.S. book publishing industry - statistics & facts
The book publishing sector in the United States continues to show resilience despite the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the changes in consumer demand, and economically difficult times. The overall net revenue of book publishers in the U.S. decreased by less than three percent between 2021 and 2022 according to the most recently available estimates, and revenue in the latter two years was higher than pre-pandemic levels. However, it is also true that physical and online retail destinations met quite different financial fates amid nationwide lockdowns, with some digitally unequipped businesses shutting their doors. Distribution channels and the publishing industry itself are becoming more digitalized each year, and consumer interest in e-books and digital audiobooks is also growing steadily. Digital audiobook revenue in particular is a fast-growing segment and one to watch in coming years.
