Despite having a modest market size compared to its European neighbors, there are clear winners in terms of product segments in the UK organic market.
Organic dairy offerings make up over one-quarter of the total market, with fresh produce ranking closely in second place with a share of just over 22 percent. Frozen organic options have the smallest share of the market.
Organic consumer trends
Generational differences are clear in organic food consumption in the UK. According to a recent survey,
millennial respondents were the most likely to state that they eat organic food, while Generation X were the least likely. Some of the
leading organic food brands based on awareness amongt UK consumers were Yeo Valley Organic, Ella's Kitchen, and Meridian. Almost 70 percent of respondents knew of the dairy company Yeo Valley Organic when surveyed.
Organic certification in the UK
Several organic certification bodies in the UK are responsible for determining if a business or product can be marketed as organic and meets the set environmental and ethical standards. Many parts of the supply chain require individual certification, including manufacturing, packing, storing, and labeling, resulting in higher prices for consumers at the supermarket checkout.
