Regional disparities in China - statistics & facts
China is a vast country characterized by considerable regional differences. Coastal regions and major urban agglomerations are much better developed than peripheral and less urbanized counterparts. This disparity can be observed in the comparison of regional urbanization rates with regional per capita GDP. The Chinese government has undertaken considerable efforts to improve the economic situation of less developed regions and has been successful in fostering the development of rural areas, but basic economic constraints make it unlikely that significant regional gaps will close in the future.
