Crime in Romania - statistics & facts
Economic and property crimes are the most common types of violations in Romania. Over the past years, the number of economic crimes, such as money laundering or tax evasion, has decreased in the country, while still being high compared to European Union (EU) average. In 2022, the police department reported that almost 7,000 economic crimes were committed in Bucharest. Card fraud has become more common in recent years, and the total value of card fraud losses peaked at over 16 million Romanian lei in 2021. At the same time, the number of thefts in Bucharest has decreased drastically, dropping by approximately 57 percent from 2010.
