Telecommunications industry in the Philippines - statistics & facts
In a world where connectivity is key, the telecommunications industry emerged among the most essential industries, as it enabled personal and professional communication and a key tool used by businesses. In the Philippines, improved telecommunications infrastructure facilitated digital transformation, spanning innovations in banking and finance, media and entertainment, and mobility. Thanks to the roll-out of the 5G network and the introduction of a third telecommunications provider, internet connection and reliability in the Philippines has significantly improved.
On the other hand, broadband technology has also seen significant developments, especially for fixed wireless access (FWA) which offers faster speed, greater flexibility, and wider coverage, especially for geographically challenging areas for fiber deployment. FWA solutions have challenged the dominance of fiber services, which were mostly available in city centers and town proper. As a response, most fiber internet providers started offering prepaid fiber internet and increased coverage for fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) which replaces older technologies such as DSL and cable internet and offers high-speed connectivity and unlimited data. In 2023, fixed broadband subscribers reached over seven million, with download speed reaching as much as 94 Mbps as of November 2024.
Recent developments in the telecommunications industry in the Philippines resulted in enhanced network speed and reliability, especially with the rollout of 5G networks and competition in the market. Although mobile network connections remains slow in comparison to neighboring countries, broadband internet speed has been competitive. Improved infrastructures can be expected to further drive the sector's growth.
The state of telecommunications infrastructure
The Philippines’ telecommunications infrastructure is still on its way toward reaching its goal of being a global communications hub. With a focus on the mobile market, the government pushes to improve the roll-out of mobile networks by introducing a common tower policy in May 2020 that will delist the telecommunications sector as a public utility. This allows infrastructure sharing within operators to increase tower density and expand wireless network coverage. As of the first quarter of 2024, the country had over 35,000 cell towers operated by tower companies and mobile network operators — still a long way from the targeted 50,000 cell sites. The industry has long been dominated by a duopoly between PLDT and Globe Telecom, which provide fixed-line networks, fixed broadband, and mobile network services. For instance, the mobile network latency, or the number of delays experienced in network communication, for residents in several regions in Mindanao was significantly higher compared to those residing in Metro Manila and Central Luzon. Mobile networks in these areas were also more inconsistent.
