Bordering Tanzania, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi is a small, landlocked country in eastern Africa. The capital, Bujumbura, is also the largest city, home to half a million inhabitants. Only about one in eight citizens live in urban areas, with the majority of its population located in rural areas. Due in large part to ongoing tension between Tutsis and Hutus, the country has been slow to develop.
