KPMG is a multinational accounting and auditing firm, providing three main business services - audit, advisory and tax services. The name KPMG represents the four principle founding members of the company and their respective member firms - Piet Klynveld, William Barclay Peat, James Marwick, and Reinhard Goerdeler. The present day company KPMG was fully established in 1987 with the merging of Peat Marwik International and KMG (Klynveld Main Goerdeler). Currently functioning with two headquarters in Amstelveen, the Netherlands, and London, in the United Kingdom, KPMG now operates in 155 countries, with the number of employees of KPMG worldwide topping 275,000 in 2024.
The Big Four
KPMG is one of the four largest audit and accounting firms in the world along with Deloitte, EY, and PwC. These firms are known collectively as the Big Four and reported a combined revenue worldwide in the region of 212 billion U.S. dollars in 2024. In terms of the revenue of the Big Four accounting/audit firms, KPMG was the smallest, generating around 29 billion U.S. dollars less than the largest, Deloitte.Increasing global turnover
The revenue of KPMG grew significantly over the past decade and reached 38.4 billion U.S. dollars in 2024. The company has consistently generated its highest regional revenues in the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) region. KPMG also has operations in the Americas and Asia-Pacific. These two regions combined account for well over half of the total annual revenue generated by the company. As with revenue, the EMEA region also tops the list for the most employees hired by the firm. In 2024, over half of the total number of KPMG employees worked in the EMEA region, followed by the Americas, then the Asia-Pacific region. Overall, KPMG had the fewest number of employees of the Big Four accounting/audit firms in the same time period. Deloitte had the largest workforce in that year with almost 460,000 employees, approximately 185,000 more than KPMG.
