Wind energy in Japan - statistics & facts
Japan's geography has an estimated capacity of around 550 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity. However, wind energy still only contributes to around one percent of the energy generation in the country and the progress is sluggish. The overall share of renewables in electricity production recently increased to close to 23 percent, with solar power and hydropower as the main sources. According to the Seventh Strategic Energy Plan, Japan's new target of renewable energy for the fiscal year 2040 is a share of 40 to 50 percent. Wind energy is planned to achieve four to eight percent of the energy generation by then.
