Thailand-United States trade relations - statistics & facts
Trade relations between Thailand and the United States date back to the early 1880s when the two nations officially formed diplomatic ties. In 2024, Thailand's trade surplus with the U.S. reached a record high of 45.6 billion U.S. dollars. That same year, the U.S. was the country's main trade partner. However, in April 2025, the Trump administration announced a 36 percent reciprocal tariff on goods from Thailand, to take effect in August. On the brink of the moratorium, Thailand received a reduced tariff rate of 19 percent, same rate as many of its neighbors. Framed as a response to trade imbalances, the measure reflects the increasing strain in U.S.-Thailand economic relations and is set to have a negative impact on sectors such as manufacturing and agriculture.
