The Dutch East India Company was the first privately owned enterprise, that went public by selling its shares to raise capital. This launched the success of today's global capitalist economy. The process of private companies in the Middle East becoming publicly traded stock was, however, a very cautious process. The first stock markets in the GCC region were established in the 1980s. Although only 3.9 percent of initial public offerings (IPOs) worldwide come from companies based in the GCC region, their stock exchanges belong to the largest market capitalization of listed companies.
