Organic farming in Germany - statistics & facts
Goats made up the largest share of livestock in German organic farming, perhaps contrary to expectation, at 34 percent. Cattle made up nine percent. Consumers had a variety of expectations from agricultural businesses overall, with species-appropriate animal husbandry being right at the top of the list. This is one of the key elements not only to ensure a successful practice of organic farming (as well as farming in general), but to keep attracting consumers who buy products of animal origin. Encouragingly so, the number of businesses following organic animal husbandry in Germany has been increasing in recent years, with around 19,200 operating in 2023.
