Lobbying in the U.S. - statistics & facts
Lobbyists spend billions of dollars each year with the shared goal of influencing policymakers and government officials. Although many are known to lobby the interests of large, controversial industries such as gun rights, fossil fuel industries, abortion, and additional healthcare access, other lobbyists vie to promote human rights issues. Since 2008, spending on lobbying in the U.S. has averaged around 3.3 billion U.S. dollars per year. There are an average of 13,000 active registered lobbyists in the United States, outnumbering members of Congress by twenty to one. While it is certainly possible to hire an independent lobbyist, many businesses and organizations opt to hire a lobbying firm to engage with government agencies and officials on their behalf. 
Lobbying expenses can reflect an industry’s degree of vulnerability to regulatory laws, such as internet or tech companies, including Amazon, Meta, and Alphabet. Amazon nearly doubled its lobbying expenditure in the past six years, from 11 to almost 20 million between 2016 and 2023. As major tech companies in the U.S. have doubled down on their lobbying activity to reduce privacy regulations, concerns surrounding consumer data protection have been raised. In 2024, the pharmaceuticals and health products industry in the United States spent the most on lobbying efforts, reaching about 294 million U.S. dollars.
Additionally, lobbying has become controversial in the United States due to the tendency for  large industries - who many Americans already consider too powerful- to lobby in their own interest rather than the needs of the public. The political influence of U.S. businesses has not gone unnoticed, with more than 40 percent of Americans agreeing that businesses should not be allowed to lobby for tax cuts or to reduce business regulations. By definition, lobbying exists to serve as an opportunity for citizens, industries, businesses to have their interests heard and considered by government officials.
Top issues & spenders
Spanning from local government to presidential elections, lobbying occurs in various degrees. Businesses are by far and away the biggest spenders on lobbying, with 3.7 billion U.S. dollars allocated to business lobbying in 2024, compared to about 200 million U.S. dollars spent by ideological groups. Public Opinion
In addition to being liaisons between government officials and other non-political entities, lobbying can contribute to the government’s system of checks and balances. For this reason, it is considered an essential aspect of democratic participation by some. However, lobbying has attracted a fair share of criticism, with many citing ethical concerns and the fear of lobbies holding too much political sway and thus discounting democratic processes. Additionally, lobbying has become controversial in the United States due to the tendency for  large industries - who many Americans already consider too powerful- to lobby in their own interest rather than the needs of the public.
