Nuclear energy in South Korea - statistics & facts
With the rise of artificial intelligence, energy demand has skyrocketed, with companies scrambling for cost-efficient sources in a time of climate crisis. With renewable energy prone to seasonal intermittency and costly compared to fossil fuels, nuclear energy has gained serious consideration as an efficient alternative. Nuclear energy already makes up around 13 percent of South Korea’s primary energy supply, and in 2024, nuclear power surpassed fossil fuels to become the number one energy source in the country for the first time. However, government policies fluctuate between the dangers and potential of nuclear energy with each new administration. Given that nuclear power implementation is spoken in terms of decades, long-term planning will determine the trajectory of the country's energy strategy.
