From 2008 to 2024, the number of bank branches operating across the European Union declined steadily. By 2024, the total had fallen to - representing a reduction of over 100,000 branches since the 2008 peak. The most pronounced drop occurred in 2023, following the COVID-19 pandemic. This ongoing decline underscores a broader shift toward digital banking and a diminishing reliance on physical banking infrastructure throughout Europe.
