Primary energy production from anaerobic fermentation biogas has remained relatively constant in Portugal. From 2013 to 2015, figures increased by 8.2 metric kilotons of oil equivalent. Since 2015, energy production from anaerobic fermentation amounted to nine metric kilotons of oil equivalent yearly.

In 2018, the EU-28 production amounted to 12,574 metric kilotons of oil equivalent.
