Between January 2016 and January 2020, the number of falsifications and uses of credit cards in France increased by 1,320. As of January 2016, there were 4,678 reported cases of falsification and uses of credit card and this number increased to 5,998 as of January 2020.
Fraud on payments in France
While the number of fraudulent transactions has
more than doubled in France since 2012, the payment industry is particularly impacted by the phenomenon. The value of fraudulent transactions on payments has
increased by 81.8 million euros between 2010 and 2018. As the expansion of financial technologies has influenced the evolution of payment services, bank fraud has been able to adapt its practices. As a result, a real boom of
frauds on online payments has been recorded in France over the last few years, revealing a phenomenon impacting the whole non-cash payment industry.
Fraud on bank cards
Bank cards have won French people over with its usability and notably its contactless option. While card payment was
the most preferred method of payment in France in 2020, it has become a major player in the payment industry. However, this special position makes bank cards the
main target when it comes to payment fraud. Although the high risk of fraud around the use bank card constitutes a real obstacle for some customers, bank card remains the
leading payment instrument for online purchase in France.
