In all private and social housing sectors in England between 2017 and 2018, flats are far more likely to be leasehold dwellings. In this period, the private rented sector had almost 1.4 million leasehold flats compared to approximately 284 thousand houses. Not surprisingly, the average floor area of owner occupied dwellings is significantly larger than the average area occupied by private and social renters.
