In 2022, there were over 8,600 companies producing food in the Netherlands. Over half of these companies were bakeries and patisseries, at just over 4,300. By comparison, there were 210 fish processors active in the Netherlands, and five companies processed margarine. In 2021, the total revenue of the
food industry amounted to roughly 76.6 billion euros.
 Revenue per branch   
Although more than half of the
food manufacturers were active in bread and pastry processing, this was not the food industry with the highest revenue. The revenue of these enterprises amounted to roughly 5.6 billion euros that year, whereas industries like dairy processing and meat processing had revenues that were more than twice as high. In 2021, the most valuable food sector in terms of revenue was the dairy processing industry with a revenue of 16 billion euros.  
Geographical division of food manufacturing  
The largest number of
food manufacturing sites could be found in the North-Holland and South-Holland provinces, with almost 1700 places each. Food manufacturing was less well-represented in Drenthe, with 225 production sites, and in Groningen, where the total number of food manufacturing sites amounted to 200 – the lowest of all provinces in 2023.
