International visitors to Australia

International visitors to Australia spent around **** billion Australian dollars more in the financial year 2024 compared to the previous year, showing signs of a significant recovery in expenditure and surpassing the 2019 pre-pandemic level. Additionally, the number of international arrivals hit over *** million. While this is still not at the pre-pandemic level, this figure shows that international visitors are slowly but surely returning to Australia following the lifting of travel bans. Both of these data points hint toward solid industry recovery as the pandemic wanes. 

Leading visitor groups

Tourists from New Zealand and China came out on top as the largest international visitor groups to Australia in the year ending June 2024. That year, over *** million visitors from New Zealand and nearly ** from China arrived in Australia, signaling a rebound from pandemic-induced travel restrictions. Chinese tourists were the biggest spenders across the leading countries or regions of residence of international tourists, contributing about **** billion Australian dollars to the Australian economy.
