Since its launch in 2005 as a platform for sharing user-generated videos, such as video blogging, tutorials or original series, YouTube has grown rapidly with multi-million video views per day. Through its Partner Program, YouTube rewards uploaders of popular videos with a share from the revenues generated from advertisement on their videos, which has given rise to a new phenomenon over the last decade: YouTube celebrities. Justin Bieber, as a prime example of an online celebrity that moved on to real life stardom, was discovered by a talent manager back in 2007 on his former own YouTube channel, Kidrauhl. Bieber's channel was also among the most subscribed YouTube channel worldwide. VanossGaming, who came in second among top YouTube channels in Canada with  billion views during the same period, was also the fourth most subscribed YouTube gaming channel worldwide.

While Justin Bieber remained one of the Canadian’s favourites on Facebook, his Twitter page was out of top 10 in Canada by number of followers. Drake’s presence was in comparison much stronger on Twitter, reaching more than **** million fans.
