The number of foreign students in higher education in Sweden peaked in the academic year 2010/11, when about 29,000 foreign students started studying in Sweden. The number of foreign students fell the following year, but has increased slightly since, reaching 25,500 by 2022-23. However, it dropped below 17,000 in 2020/21, a number that must be seen in relation with the COVID-19 pandemic. That year, over 75,000 students from Sweden studied at Swedish universities.
