In 2022, 291 cyclists were killed in traffic in the Netherlands. This was a steep increase compared to 2010 and one of the highest number of cyclists killed in traffic accidents in 20 years. In total, there were roughly 737
road fatalities in 2022.
 Most road fatalities in car accidents  
The bicycle was the most dangerous
mode of transportation in 2022, with a total of 291 fatalities. The car came in second place, with 225 victims. By comparison, that year 57 pedestrians and 20 truck drivers were also killed in traffic accidents in the Netherlands.
Trend in traffic deaths  
 The
number of road fatalities per 100,000 inhabitants decreased between 2006 and 2016, from 4.6 per 100,000 people in 2006 to 3.5 most recently. The number of traffic deaths peaked in 2007, at 4.7 per 100,000 inhabitants. The lowest value was reached in 2014, at just over three. After 2014, the number of deaths increased again.
