Edeka is one of Germany’s best-known supermarket chains. The group also partially controls the Netto discounter supermarkets. Edeka’s revenue grew steadily during the last decade, hitting **** billion euros in 2024.Â
Edeka had around * stores in 2024. Numbers had been in a slump in the previous decade, but afterwards things picked up. At least until 2012. There have been several store closings throughout Germany due to rising competition from other markets. Still, so far Edeka is among the top three supermarkets where German consumers regularly buy food and products for everyday use. Followed by the REWE Group, another German supermarket chain, Edeka also had the largest market share in food retail in Germany.
While the majority of German shoppers still bought groceries and daily use products in supermarkets, the rising cost of living and especially rising prices for groceries have led to the increasing popularity of discount grocery stores. According to most recent figures, discounters now claim almost ** percent of total revenues in the food retail sector.
