In the 2010s, the annual volume of pure and blended biodiesel consumed in the Portuguese transport sector decreased by 75 kilotons of oil equivalent, plummeting to 248 kilotons in 2020. In that year, the European Union (EU) biodiesel consumption in the transport sector amounted to roughly 14 million tons of oil equivalent. However, biodiesel consumption upsurged in 2021 in Portugal, reaching almost 340 kilotons of oil equivalent.
