The biopharmaceutical sector researches and produces pharmaceutical medications which are extracted or semi-synthesized from a biological source. These can include vaccines, antibodies, blood and tissue products and therapeutic proteins. In 2017 there were 224 companies in the biopharmaceutical sector with a turnover of five million British pounds or over. This was followed by 116 companies with a turnover of between 250 thousand and 500 thousand British pounds. The turnover size band with the lowest number of companies was that of between 500 thousand and one million British pounds with 50 companies.
