In the period of consideration between 1990 and 2022, passenger car stock in Romania continuously grew. In 1990, Romania registered *** million passenger cars; by 2022, passenger car stock peaked at more than *** million units. Naturally, this also led to an increase in the number of passenger cars per 1,000 inhabitants, which rose to *** vehicles in the same year.

Passenger car sales

Given the fact that Automobile Dacia is the most important car manufacturer in Romania, it comes as no surprise that Dacia is the automotive manufacturer with the highest share of passenger car sales, followed by Skoda. The number of new passenger cars sold peaked in 2007 at over ** vehicles. Subsequently, the number of new passenger cars registered a significant drop, maintaining a rather constant value of approximately ** new vehicles sold per year since 2017. However, the demand for passenger cars is expected to increase in the following years.

Passenger car registration

Lately, passenger cars have become a necessity for Romanian people. If in 2013 there were * new passenger car registrations, this number increased to ** thousand vehicles in 2019. When it comes to used vehicles, there have been over * Dacia registrations in the country from January to June 2024, and Dacia was the leading brand by far in this category too.
