Sugar in Europe
In the European Union-27, the
volume of sugar beet produced is forecast to continuously increase during the next decade and amount to approximately 116 million metric tons by 2029.
EU Imports of sugar are expected to decrease during the coming years. In Germany, the
revenue of the sugar industry has been on a continuous decline since 2012. Another large importer of sugar in Europe is France. In 2020, most of
France's imports of sugar came from Spain and Belgium.
Sugar in the UK
The
sales from manufacturing sugar in the United Kingdom have declined in recent years. In 2020 this trend reversed for the first time in years. The annual sales value that year was up by almost 100 million British pounds compared to 2019 and amounted to 740 million British pounds (GBP). The
price of sugar confectionery was nearly 3.72 British pounds per kilogram. The United Kingdom
exports over 35 million kilograms of sugar confectionery to countries within the European Union.
