Action cameras are small digital cameras designed to be attached to a person or object in order to film action shots. For this reason, action cameras offer a dramatic point of view as well as mobility to the person operating the camera. This makes action cameras particularly popular amongst outdoor and extreme sports athletes. These small cameras are usually relatively sturdy and robust – some of them are waterproof –fairly simple to operate, and capable of capturing action in high-definition video and images. Action cameras often have a wide-angle fish-eye perspective as well. 

In terms of manufacturers, GoPro is a pioneer in this market. The California-based company released its first model, which still used a 35mm film, in 2004. With digital cameras becoming more popular and more affordable over the years, particularly in the U.S., GoPro (then still known as Woodman Labs, Inc) launched its first Digital Hero, a camera capable of recording video as well. Since then, GoPro has improved its cameras and launched new features and models to the market. As of 2016, companies such as Sony, TomTom, Garmin and Xiaomi also manufacture and sell their own models of action cameras.

Action cameras sales worldwide are forecast to increase from *** million units in 2015 to nearly ** million in 2016. America accounts for just over half of all action camera shipments in the world, with projections to maintain its share in the coming years. The Europe, Middle East and Africa region is the second largest market for action cameras, as this region is about one third of the global market.
