This statistic shows the number of hotels selling alcohol and pubs in England and Wales per year from 2008 to 2016, by type of license. In 2016, **** thousand hotels and pubs were licensed for on-sales of alcohol, compared to **** thousand licensed for off-sales.
In the UK drinking establishments licensed for on-sale of alcohol are licensed to sell for consumption on the premises after purchase, whereas an off-license means the opposite. Off-licenses are often held by shops.
