During the period 2011-2019, the number of cashless payment transactions in the European Union (EU) member states increased year on year. In 2014 the number of transactions amounted to 114.5 billion, while in 2019 this had risen to 152.5 billion.

This rise goes hand in hand with the rise in POS (point of sale) terminals in the European Union.
